Transhipment to drive growth at Port Klang

The new source of growth at Port Klang is expected to be fuelled by transshipment according to one of the world’s largest liner operator which makes regular direct call at the premier Malaysian port.

Noting that transshipment recorded 46 per cent growth at the port in the first six months of this year, the managing director of P&O Nedlloyd Agencies M A Sdn Bhd Patrick Lim Keng Lee said transhipment would be the next driver of growth for Port Klang which could help position the position to be amongst the top ten container ports in the world in the near future.

In the first six months of this year the total volume of container throughput at Port Klang rose by 18.2 per cent to 1.75 million TEUs. The volume of transshipment relayed via the two terminals at Port Klang – Westport and Northport – rose by a hefty 46 per cent to 850,000 TEUs in the first half of this year.

Lim said P&O Nedlloyd, is the largest customer for Northport, was proud to have been able to help contribute to this and in particular to have taken a positive and leading role.

Lim expressed delight over the delivery of first of Northport’s new post panamax cranes which offers an outreach the 17 rows of containers across to handles vessels such as “P&O Nedlloyd Houtman” which marked its maiden call at Port Klang on 20 July 2001.

The 6,802 TEUs container ship, named  after Cornelis de Houtman, the sixteenth century Dutch explorer, is  300 metres long, 43 metres wide with a service speed of 24.5 knots and flies the Dutch flag.

The vessel, deployed in the Europe Far East service which calls Port Klang every week.is the third of the company's four "whale" class vessels to enter service this year and also called at Port Klang.

Lim said P&O Nedlloyd has launched a full suite of  e-commerce products in the internet providing fully interactive shipping just a click away.

“Users of www.ponl.com can now query our port-to-port schedules online, book their cargo with online bookings, register their shipping instructions with bill registration, print their bills of lading at their own premises, track their cargo by bill number or container number and follow our ship movements with our advanced vessel tracking.

The maiden call of the vessel P&O Nedlloyd Houtman was also a farewell tribute to the Dutch ambassador, Conrad van Tooren who returns home after a long posting in Malaysia.

The event was also attended by the general manager of Port Klang Authority, Datuk Paduka O C Phang.
