The
Sinakor Merchant Marine Co, Ltd
has joined with three other S
Korean shipping lines in offering
a direct shipping service between
Port Klang and S Korea that is
expected to contribute
significantly to the expanding
bilateral trade between Malaysia
and S Korea.
According
to the general manager of
Metroport Shipping Sdn Bhd, Danny
Wong Sea Chiong the line, which
commenced its dedicated weekly
service between S Korean and
Malaysia effective 1 June 2001
wants to develop Port Klang as the
transhipment hub in South East
Asia.
Metroport
Shipping is the local agent for
the Korean carrier, Sinokor
Merchant Marine Co Ltd.
The
Malaysian Korea Service (MKS) is
jointly service offered by a
consortium of four major Korean
shipping lines namely Sinokor
Merchant Marine, Dongnama Line,
Heung-A Shipping and Hanjin
Shipping.
With
the exception of Hanjin Shipping
(which takes up slot space) the
other three carriers contribute
one vessel each in the new
service.
Sinokor
has deployed one 1,600-teu Sinokor
Seoul, Heung-A with 1,100-teu
Young Liberty and Dongnama
deployed 1,100-teu Young Chance.
The
port of rotation of the weekly
service covers Ulsan ,Pusan,
Kwangyang, Hong Kong ,Singapore.Port
Klang, Singapore, Pasir Gudang,
Hong Kong, and Ulsan.
According
to Danny this is also first time
for Sinakor has deployed its own
ship, Sinakor Seoul in the
regional trade.
The
weekly-dedicated service calls
Northport on every Friday and
Pasir Gudang on every Sunday
MKS
service offers the best transit
time between Port Klang and Pasir
Gudang to Korea main port. This
service offers 11 days transit
time from Port Klang to Ulsan,
which is one of the shortest
transit times in the industry.
In
addition the direct service, it
also offer faster transhipment
option to Japanese ports like
Tomakomai, Niigata, Hiroshima,
Fukoya and other ports in the east
coast of Japan.
"Our
shipping principal views Port
Klang as the important
transhipment hub in the region as
the terminal operators are well
equipped with latest handling
equipment. Besides, the
productivity level and the
handling ratio is also in par with
other major terminals in the
region," said Danny.
"We
feel our entry into the service is
timely as Korean carrier, Cho Yang
has suspended its Intra-Asia
service effective April this year.
As such the new service is
basically replaces the old Port
Klang Korea Service with
additional call at Pasir Gudang
for southern region shippers in
Malaysia,” he said.
He
said plans are in pipeline to
attract more regional transhipment
traffic via Port Klang to the
Korean market.
“It
is estimated some 30,000 TEUs are
being shipped out of Port Klang to
Korean market annually," said
Danny.
Besides
the dedicated service, Sinokor has
also a slot-sharing arrangement in
the weekly Malacca Straits service
operated jointly by Heung-A and
Dongnama. The port of rotation of
the service covers Inchon,
Kwangyang, Busan, Keelung, Hong
Kong, Singapore, Port Klang, Medan,
Penang, Singapore, Manila and
Inchon.
