Kuantan Port is poised to act as a
catalyst for growth of the economic
region on East Coast of Peninsular
Malaysia with the rapidly expanding
cargo base fostered by the emergence
of the petrochemical industries.
"Parallelling the structural
transformation of the hinterland,
Kuantan Port has, in the recent
years, witnessed the handling of a
wider variety, and greater volume of
cargo, "said the executive vice
chairman of Kuantan Port Consortium
Sdn Bhd, Datuk Shamsuddin Md Dubi
He said in response to the expansion
in demand "a correct and timely
response was initiated to meet this
new demand."
Among the projects initiated by the
port operating company are the
development and recent commissioning
of the Liquid Cargo Berth 3 (LCB3)
and the commissioning of the first
200 metres of the total 400 metres
quayline of the container terminal.
The state-of-the-art facilities have
enlarged the new cargo and ship
handling capacities at Kuantan Port
to handle a wider variety of cargo.
Shamsuddin noted that the improved
berth occupancy (as a result of the
additional capacity) has enhanced
vessel handling and improved
turnaround time of vessels at the
port considerably.
"This is reflected in the reduction
of waiting time of vessels,
especially at the general cargo
berth," he added.
"The expanding volume and growing
variety of cargo handled at our port
is indeed a testimony of our
versatility and improved capability.
We are no longer a primary
commodities port that we once were.
Kuantan Port is a modern
multi-purpose port at par with major
port in the region," he stressed.
The port has dedicated facilities to
handle containers, liquid bulk and
dry bulk cargo as well as the
ability to meet specialized
requirements of general cargo,
including steel pipes.
"But what is also compelling about
our port is that the operating
environment at the port is much more
integrated as well as efficient,"
Shamsuddin said. |
