Risks management clubs meet in KL

In a significant boost reflecting the emerging importance of Malaysia as a maritime centre, two of the world's leading clubs, the London P&I Club and United Kingdom P&I Club will meet in Kuala Lumpur over the next one week.

London P&I Club will hold its annual general meeting on 16 October 2002 in what is the first such meeting to be held outside the United Kingdom.

Founded in 1866, the London Club exists to offer third party liability insurance to shipowners, operators and charterers on a mutual, non-profit basis. The Club handles claims ranging from crew sickness or cargo damage to the full cost of major oil spills, and other such disasters.

The Club, managed by Bilbrough & Co Ltd, draws its members from well established shipowners operating from the world's major shipping centres.

The chief executive of Bilbrough, Paul Hinton, who will be in Kuala Lumpur for the meeting, will also speak at the 1st Asia Maritime & Logistics Conference that opens today.

Kuala Lumpur is also the venue for a meeting of the United Kingdom Mutual Ship Assurance Association Ltd P&I Club that will hold a day seminar as well as host a dinner for the shipping community.

The chairman of the Club, Alec Kairis, will lead the meeting that is expected to discuss current developments and issues in the industry that have impacted on the risk assessment and management of liabilities in the light of new security and safety challenges.

The Club, managed by Thomas Miller, has stringent standards on quality requirements for protection of vessels and whose members include Malaysian shipowners.
