India's Ministry of Shipping has told the country's shipowners to take the
initiative to develop a fleet of liquefied natural gas carriers.
With India emerging as a major importer of the gas, it has been estimated
that by 2012, the country's imports will almost equal Japan's current LNG
imports of 60m tonnes per annum.
"India will need about 25 LNG vessels by 2012 and 34 by 2025," said Indian
National Shipowners' Association president Yudhishthir Khatau, who is also
managing director of Varun Shipping. |
