As
the deadline for STCW '95 nears,
the Indonesian Ministry of
Communication has stated that it
will primarily upgrade Indonesian
seafarers who are already working
on foreign vessels and those who
have secured working contracts
with shipping companies.
To
execute the policy, the ministry
has set up a team comprising
prominent figures in maritime
training and manning sectors.
Pudji Sumarto, a member of the
team, said the policy would be
imposed on more than 30,000
seafarers, ranging from rating to
officer.
"The
way the team works is to issue
endorsement for those seafarers'
certificates of competence that
are still under STCW '78. Then if
all preparation of the
implementation of STCW '95 is
finished, they will be upgraded to
the amended convention," he
