Northport has taken delivery of its first of the five super post-panamax quayside crane from IMPSA Malaysia.
The crane which has than 50 metres outreach, 40 tonnes lifting capacity under spreader and a lifting height of 37 metres above wharf level, the crane is capable of servicing vessels with 18 rows of containers across, (even wider than the 17 containers across "P&O Nedlloyd Houtman" which made its maiden call at Northport recently).
Northport said the on-schedule arrival of this highly sophisticated equipment will allow Northport to service all types of container vessels.
Two more units are expected to be delivered in September, and the remaining two by year end.
IMPSA, which has supplied a total of 55 shoreside crane in the last 10 years to local ports (including 12 to Northport), has been in Malaysia for 12 years.
It also supplies equipment to local ports and exports to countries like USA, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand and Saudi Arabia. IMPSA
The company which has its fabrication facility at Lumut employs some 70 local engineers and technicians, is mainly managed by Malaysians.
IMPSA Malaysia sources its supplies locally, and currently has reached 60 per cent local content manufactured equipment.
