Reflecting the healthy growth of the economy last year, total volume of
containers handled by Malaysian ports rose by a commendable 10.4 per cent
over the volume handled in 2003.
Computing the volume of traffic handled by 11 major container handling ports
in Malaysia the double-digit growth totaled 11.5 million TEUs.
Port Klang, comprising Northport and Westport handled 5.2 million TEUs last
year with Northport accounting for 2.69 million TEUs in 2004 and Westport
making up the rest of the volume.
In the south, Port of Tanjung Pelepas handled 3.48 million while Johor Port
posted a 7 per cent increase totaling 803,895 TEUs.
Penang Port serving the northern Peninsular Malaysia region recorded 11.96
per cent totaling 770,530 TEUs while on the east coast of Peninsular
Malaysia, Kuantan Port saw 13.56 per cent increase totaling 123,000 TEUs.
The combined container traffic handled by ports in Sabah totaled 210,000
TEUs while the total traffic at Sarawak ports fell marginally to 353,373
TEUs. |
