Baltic International Maritime Organisation and the International Shipping
Federation have announced that they are conducting a 2005 update of the
original 1990 BIMCO/ISF Manpower survey.
The survey has previously been updated in 1995 and 2000.
Maritime administrations and shipping companies are being invited to
complete a short questionnaire.
Since the last update in 2000, a number of developments have occurred in the
shipping industry, such as the introduction of the new security regime under
the ISPS Code following September 11, stricter visa requirements, shore
leave restrictions, the worrying criminalisation of seafarers involved in
maritime accidents and the full entry into force of the 1995 amendments to
the 1978 STCW convention.
BIMCO/ISF believe it is appropriate to re-examine the world-wide manpower
situation to see if these and other developments have had a particular
effect.
The results will help BIMCO/ISF to evaluate global seafarer supply and
demand.
