PTP centre-piece of new development corridor

A centre-piece in the proposed creation of the South-West Johor Development Authority is the designation of a logistics/maritime corridor that will leverage on the world –class Port of Tanjung Pelepas.

The corridor will covers areas around the Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) that would be developed to support various maritime industries over the next five years, in line with efforts taken for the integrated development of southern Johor (PBJS) project.

Menteri Besar Johor Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman said recently that port and its surrounding areas have been identified as the core development area and key driver in the implementation of the PBJS project covering the International Petrochemical Centre, Maritime Industrial Centre and Regional Bunker Supply Centre.

"Various developments would be carried out at the area and PTP itself would continue to be developed as a transhipment hub and a logistics and manufacturing industrial centre through its free zone areas," he said.

PTP is expected to n a major beneficiary of the move to create the new development covering the south western part of Johor, especially in boosting its prospects to emerge as a regional logistics hub.

PTP, which has abundant land bank was accorded Free Zone status in March 1998 and has been attracting a steady stream of regional distribution companies setting up international procurement centres.

The Malaysian government also appointed PTP as a Free Zone Authority (FZA) on June 16, 1999, to administer both the Commercial Free Zone and the Industrial Free Zone. This administration of the FZA functions within PTP ensures smooth and efficient transactions.

Pelepas Free Zone (PFZ) is situated adjacent to the port and terminal and covers an area of about 1,000 acres.

This is segmented into different zones depending on the type of activities carried out.

Of this, approximately 400 acres has been designated as Free Commercial Zone (FCZ) reserved for distribution, logistics, and warehousing activities ideal for consolidation, International Procurement Centres, regional distribution centers, and distribution services.

The remaining 600 acres of Free Industrial Zone (FIZ) is reserved for light, medium and heavy manufacturing industries.
