Despite
the bleak forecasts following
the September 11 tragedy,
Northport still managed to garner
a strong market share of more than
60 per cent of the total
container trade in Port
Klang and remained as the
largest container terminal
operator in the country.
Total
containers handled from Jan-Oct
2001 amounted to 1.93 million TEUs,
denoting a 7 per cent increase
over the 1.79 million TEUs handled
during the same period
last year.
Consistent
with the concerted efforts
by Port Klang to be the
regional hub, transhipment traffic
continued to make enourmous
strides. Total transhipment volume
through Port Klang for Jan-Oct
2001 amounted to 1.52 million TEUs,
an impressive 41 pre cent increase
over the 1.08 TEUs handled
last year. Northport's
transhipment volume for the same
period this year was 832,249 TEUs,
capturing a market share of 55 per
cent of the transhipment trade at
Port Klang. Transhipment traffic
represents about 43 per cent of
Northport's total volume.
"Northport
would continuously upgrade and
expand its facilities to
meet the increasing demands
of the major shipping lines and
remain the port of choice.
The purchase of five
new super post-Panamax quay
cranes, landside equipment,
conversion of two conventional
berths to multi purpose container
berths, substantial investments in
the IT sector were all geared to
establishing Northport as the
premier port of Malaysia,"
said the Chairman of Northport
(Malaysia) Bhd, Tan Sri Ahmad
Sarji.
