Southeast
Asian waters around Indonesia and
the Strait of Malacca remain
blackspots in worldwide piracy
attacks recorded recently.
In
the first half of 2000 the number
of incidents worldwide rose
slightly to 165, athough the
figire is believed to be higher in
the light of many cases go
unreported.
The
waters around strife-torn
Indonesia again saw the largest
number with 44 actual and
attempted attacks, a significant
fall over 56 in the same period in
2000, according to the
International Maritime Bureau’s
half year report.
Globally
the number of attacks was largely
constant rising from 161 in the
first six months of 2000 to 165
this year.
One
of the world’s busiest shipping
lanes the Strait of Malacca saw
the number of attacks remain
constant at 14, while one of the
littoral states Malaysia saw
incidents in its waters nearly
double from seven to 13 compared
with the same period last year.
The
incidents in the Strait of
Malacca, Indonesia and Malaysia
saw 54 seafarers being taken
hostage.
