Westport
Malaysia, at Port Klang helped
boost the fortunes of the
Hutchison Whampoa – the
world’s largest port operator
– by offsetting an unexpected
decline in the volume of
containers handled in Hong Kong,
Shanghai and the UK where the Hong
Kong based company operates and
owns port terminals in the first
half of this year.
The
port operator recorded sharp
decline in throughput at its
Thamesport, Harwich and Felixstowe
operations but witnessed a surge
in traffic at Westport and also
its operations at Koja Terminal in
Jakarta, Indonesia.
Hutchinson
Whampoa, which has acquired 30 per
cent interest in Kelang Multi
Terminal Sdn Bhd, concessionaire
of Westport, recorded 5 per cent
increase in throughput worldwide
to over 12 million TEUs in the
first six months of 2001.
The
conglomerate’ s chairman Li Kah
Shing, reported the combined
turnover of Hutchison’s ports
was up 2 per cent at HK$6.78bn
(US$869m) boosted by a number of
new ventures.
“The
growth in turnover reflects
increased throughput at the
group’s Yantian ports and the
throughput of ports acquired in
the second half of 2000, including
Koja Terminal in Indonesia and
Kelang Multi Terminal in Malaysia,
which more than offset throughput
declines in Hong Kong, Shanghai
and UK ports,” Li said.
