The combined
container terminals comprising the port of Shenzhen in south China are on
course to crash into the top five in the world, likely to leapfrog Los
Angeles and Kaohsiung in the process following a tremendous first half.
Throughput was up 42 per cent in the first six months year-on-year, hitting
4.58 million TEU, the Shenzhen Municipal Port Bureau reported.
The bureau highlighted the continuing booming export scene from the Pearl
River Delta as well as improved terminal efficiency as primary reasons for
the increase.
Hutchison Ports Holdings' Yantian International Container Terminals saw
volumes grow by 30 per cent to 2.31 million TEUs, Chiwan Container
Terminals' throughput increased 46 per cent to 716,800 TEUS and Shekou
Container Terminals' throughput leapt 83 per cent to 635,000 TEUs.
Shenzhen is one of the fastest growing container ports in the world. In
2000, 1.3 million boxes passed through the terminals. This total passed the
5 million mark last year and is on course to hit 9m this year, leaving Pusan
in its sights for 2004. |
