Northport Breached 1 Million TEUs for First Half 2001

 

Despite reported global economic slowdown , Northport has poised an overall steady improved performance in the first half of 2001.
 
The first six months of 2001registered another double digit growth surpassing the 1million TEU mark again. Northport recorded a 10% increase over the same period last year. Containerised cargo registered 1,117,520 teus for the Jan-June 2001 period as compared to 1,019,210 teus for the same period in 2000. Northport continues to contribute the majority of the traffic movement in Port Klang with a market share of 64%.
 
Despite the traditional slack period in June, Northport in June , Northport continued to record high volumes for the month. According to market sources, although there has been a decline in traffic to America , this was offset by the increase in container movement within the Intra Asia region. The increase in both the inbound traffic and transshipment drove overall container volumes in Northport.
 
Transhipment traffic saw a major increase registering a growth of 35%. Traffic volume for this sector for this sector rose to 475,888teus for January to June 2001 in comparison to 353,328 teus handle for the same period last year.
 
Regional traffic particulary from the Far-East and gulf India ports continued to see an increase in transshipment volume at Port Klang. Overall Northport is also doubling up to be an excellent transhipment hub for shipping lines in the region, dominating over 55 per cent of the transshipment market at Port Klang. 
 
In the first six months, there has also been a market increase in the number of vessel calls at Northport with 2,628 container vessels as compared to 2,329 for the same period last year, an increase of 12.8%.Major main line operators continue to initiate new services and deploy bigger capacity vessels.
 
Driven by the continued strong performance figures for the past several quarters. Northport recently took delivery of its latest super-post panamax crane. The crane which arrive last week is expected to be ready for operations by early August 2001. Pour similar units are due to be commissioned in stage between September and December this year.
