Minister visits Westport

Y.B. Tan Sri Dato’ Hj Muhyiddin bin Hj Mohd Yassin, Minister of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs visited Westport with an entourage of 8 senior directors, under- secretaries and ministry officials.

The first official visit to the nations fastest growing terminal is intended to give fresh insights into the latest developments in the Malaysian shipping industry and fast growing throughput volumes that has taken Westport to a significant global positioning.

The Minister was also given a tour of the facilities and value added services that the port provides to local shippers and cargo owners. These facilities include the Distripark within the terminal grounds that allows for value adding services and the Container Freight Station activities. The Minister was truly pleased that Westport and Port Klang have low operation cost and significant savings for the local importers.

The Ministry of domestic trade and consumer affairs has always played a pivotal role in consultation and interaction between the government and private sector, with the government facilitating the development of the private sector by way of liberalizing legislations and simplifying procedures as well as support and incentives where necessary.

In the same light, Y. Bhg Dato’ Nik Ibrahim Kamil, Chairman of Westport Holdings said, “Westport is very appreciative of the government’s efforts, especially spearheaded by the honorable YB’s Ministry in promoting private sector involvement in hinterland activities. The hinterland areas surrounding the port together with private sectors have certainly resulted in increased port activities”.

The government’s call on Malaysian importers and exporters to use local ports has also given Westport the added edge with increased throughput both at the container and conventional terminals.
