Shipowners have warned that bids to end block exemption by the European
Commission ignores the stabilising effect such treaties have on volatile
shipping markets.
Shipowners have complained that the European Commission's action to end
block exemption on liner conferences ignores existing treaty commitments and
pays insufficient attention to economic consequences of ending liner
conferences.
In its response to the commission's "White Paper" on the review of
Regulation 4056/86, which would apply EC competition rules to maritime
transport, published in October, the International Chamber of Shipping
continues to insist that liner conferences have had a stabilising effect on
volatile and cyclical shipping markets.
It says the block exemption assures reliable services for shippers, while
contributing to the provision of adequate and reliable maritime transport
that has underpinned the rapid expansion of world trade. |
