The market for container handling equipment in Malaysia in recent years has
been extremely buoyant in view of the rapid growth of containerization in
the country.
Suppliers of self-geared side loaders, which offer considerably flexibility
in loading and unloading containers in particular witnessed bullish demand.
Hammar Maskin Sweden AB which started operation in Malaysia in 2003 has
become the most selected sideloader brand by the hauliers in the country.
Hammer supplied 67 units of hammer side loader in 2004 and remained as the
market leader with some 93 per cent of the side loader market.
“We have supplied a total of 29 units in 2005,” said the managing director
of Hammar, Bengt-Olof Hammer.
Hammer who was in Kuala Lumpur recently said the entire Asian cargo handling
equipment market will expand rapidly over the next few years.
He said the top six ports are in Asia and having its subsidiary in Malaysia
will put Hammar in a strong position where regional marketing is concerned.
“In fact the Malaysian will be the regional centre for Hammer product. Our
plant in Rantau Panjang, Selangor will supply high quality Hammer side
loader to Asian market,” he said.
He felt the real major boost in the region was expected to come when the
railway between Singapore and China is completed.
Mr Olof Hammar said the side loaders simplify movement of containers.
“When haulier arrives at the shipper’s premises, the driver naturally wants
unloading to be quick as possible. After all, a truck has wheels for
traveling, not for standing still, waiting for a crane or forklift to be
free so that the container can be unloaded from the trailer. With our side
loaders driver can unload the container in a few minute and continue his
journey,” he said.
He said Hammar Maskin (M) Sdn Bhd; the subsidiary of Hammer Maskin AB of
Sweden is responsible for manufacturing and assembling side loaders using
components from the factory in Sweden. |
