The
Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) yesterday
called on the government to expedite the setting
up of the National Port Authority (NPA).
The purpose of the NPA would be to oversee and
streamline the operations of all ports in the
country.
The NPA could, among other things, help cut out
unhealthy competition among ports by avoiding a
duplication of services and facilities, said
MTUC vice-president A. Balasubramaniam, who is
also the secretary of the Union of Employees of
Port Ancillary Services Suppliers.
He said the NPA could also assist in creating
uniformity in the wages and terms and conditions
of work for the 30,000 workers at the various
ports. - Bernama
