The
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency will
recruit more personnel as part of efforts to
boost its operations.
Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Mohd
Sidek Hassan said the agency needed a long-term
plan to enhance its assets by beefing up both
its equipment and human resources.
“This is to ensure the agency will be able to
carry out its responsibility and work more
effectively,” he said after a visit to the
agency’s base in Pulau Indah here yesterday.
Mohd Sidek said that at present most of the
manpower in the agency was recruited from among
personnel in the navy, Customs Department or
other agencies, which would not be enough in the
long run.
“The agency will need to have a continuous
recruitment plan and conduct training which
matches the agency’s demand,” he added.
Agency director-general Laksamana Datuk Mohd
Amdan Kurish said its employment rate was
currently at about 80% and that there were still
some 1,000 vacancies.
He said the Public Service Department had
approved about 4,000 posts for the agency, of
which only 3,000 had been filled.
“To ease the shortage, the agency is now more
open to hiring from among members of the public
or fresh university graduates,” he said.
“We are targeting to reach full employment by
the end of 2010,” he said, adding that strict
recruitment procedures and a long training
period were the main reasons for the shortage in
personnel.
