Three sailors rescued from boat with major leak

Three sailors were rescued when a Manila-registered vessel sprang a major leak and started to sink off the coast of Batu Pahat.

Two Malaysian Maritime Enforce-ment Agency patrol boats arrived to evacuate the sailors half an hour after receiving a distress call from the boat’s owner.

The three were an Australian and two Malaysians, all aged between 34 and 48.

The rescuers then used a water pump to remove water from the M.Y. Monica and later towed it to Batu Pahat for repairs.

The M.Y. Monica left Danga Bay in Johor Baru on Oct 13 and was on its way to Pulau Pangkor when the leak occured.

The agency’s southern region chief First Admiral Che Hassan Jusoh said a distress call was received from the boat ow
ner on Wednesday morning who reported that his vessel suffered a major leak.

Che Hassan said that it was believed that the leak occurred in the engine room.

The vessel was towed to Batu Pahat for repairs as soon as the water was pumped out.
