The transportation and logistics service sector is changing
rapidly, both structurally as well as in functionalities. This
has been largely because of changes recent bought about by
increasing global trade volume as well as changes in global
trading pattern and distribution of trade fostered by
globalization. Changes are also being fostered by vertical and
horizontal integration by modal operators seeking new business
models to respond to changing shippers’ needs and user
expectations.
The advent of e-commerce is a critical enabler which has
provided the IT platform to advance the changes in
functionalities of transportation and logistics services. The IT
platform addresses the key issue that transportation is no
longer about moving cargo from A to B but fusing the segmented
services in the transportation pipeline into a non-segmented and
seamless function.
The fusing of the segmented services and widening (and
broadening) of the scope of transport and logistics is best
served by application of total solution demonstrated by supply
chain management aimed at meeting specific customer
requirements. Supply chain management thus become crucial to the
development of transportation and logistics services.
The vast and visible changes taking place in the transportation
and logistics services sector creates demand for “new knowledge”
which employees in the industry must be equipped with respond to
user expectation and market demand. There is a need for
companies in the transport and logistics industry to focus on
human capital development which helps to create a conducive
environment for companies to compete in what is becoming an
increasing competitive and globalised marketplace. |
