The Royal
Customs & Excise Department of Selangor has started scanning containers
with X-ray machine. The machine uses a low-level gamma radiation to
penetrate the object and complete the scanning within two minutes.
“This allows Customs officers to scan a higher percentage of incoming
goods and increase the probability of detecting wrongly declared goods,
contraband, drugs, explosives and even illegal immigrants,” said Dato
Wazir Muaz.
With the new equipment, inspection can be done with out having to break
the seal of a container as was required previously.
This saves valuable time for hauliers and forwarding agents and besides,
there is no extra charge for unloading and reloading of the boxes for
the inspection.
The RM17 million machine captures data on date and time of inspection,
container number and the contents of the box.
