First diesel electric straddle carrier in the region
Klang Container Terminal has commissioned the first of the 11 Diesel Electric Transmission version straddle carriers - the first to do so at a local or in a regional port.
The diesel electric straddle carriers incorporates the latest state-of-the-art technology, are more environment friendly and expected to have lower maintenance cost and uses less fuel said the Engineering Manager of KCT, Azman Wahidudin.
"The advantage of diesel electric design unit is that it has no hydraulic system and has less mechanical linkages and thus reducing the intensity of maintenance and rate of wear and tear," said Azman.
The eleven units will be delivered in stages beginning May this year. These will complement the existing 57 units of straddle carriers.
Straddle carriers are a reliable work-horse at the terminal as it is designed to deliver and receive containers directly on to hauliers outside the container yard. This reduces container movements considerably in the stacking area within the port and ensures hauliers achieve a better turn around time.
