New record set for box handling

New record was again set in the highest monthly container throughput handled at the Port when the traffic volume breached 61,675 TEUs in the month of May this year. The previous high of 52,762 TEUs was recorded in the month of April 2000.

The record handling reveals high-density operations at the Johor Port Container Terminal (JPCT) and a high level of productivity increase.

Each crane at the terminal handled 12,335 TEUs in May this year. This is a commendable performance for JPCT when compared with other well-established container handling facilities in Malaysia.

JPCT recorded an impressive 15 per cent growth totalling 247,945 TEUs in the first five month period of this year compared with 215,671 TEUs in the corresponding period in 1999. The increase raised the average box traffic by 14.96 per cent to close to 50,000 TEUs per month.

The three-berth terminal which draws 760 metre of quayline offers 15 metre depth alongside and is capable of accommodating vessels up to 80,000 displacement tonnes.

The terminal is supported by five quay cranes and 17 transfer cranes and has a capacity to handle up to one million TEUs.
