JOINT EFFORTS  TO PROMOTE PETROCHEMICAL HUB

The cargo throughput via Kuantan Port has receive a major boost with the higher volume of liquid traffic generated by the petrochemical industries following the commissioning of the two Integrated Petrochemicals Complexes in Kertih and Gebeng'.

"In additional to the existing traffic from the committed petrochemical in the Eastern Corridor  we will be attracting new petrochemicals manufacturing company to further expand our throughput base through Kuantan Port," said the General Manager (Marketing & Corporate Services) of KPC, Wong Soon Fah.

"We are committed to transforming Kuantan Port as a Petrochemical Port in the Eastern Corridor by meeting the growing demand for the  port facilities and services by expanding petrochemical industries," he said.

To meet the increase demand for port facilities, Kuantan Port Consortium Sdn Bhd, the concession holder of Kuantan Port, is in advanced stage of dredging 14 million cubis metre of soil to form the extended internal basin 80 hectares with 4 kilometers water frontage.

"The excavation work is expected to be completed by middle of next year," said Wong.

" 'As much  my main task will be heading the KPC marketing team in attracting more operators to set-up their facilities at the Eastern Corridor which cover the stage of Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan and the district of Mersing in Johor. As of today we have  managed to attract eight major chemical manufacturing giant to Gebeng Industrial Area identified  by the Pahang State Economic Development Corporation. Among the operators which are happy with the incentives and investment climate in the Eastern Corridor include  Amoco Chemical, WR Grace, Cryovac, Eastman Chemical, Kaneka, Polyplastis Asia Pasific, BASF Petronas Chemicals and Flexsys Chemical," said Wong.

He said all these industries have realised the advantage of operating in an industrial area that is totally dedicated ,committed and conducive to ensuring their  success.

"They have reaped benefits by setting up their operations in Gebeng  Industries Area, which is rapidly  emerging as a showpiece petrochemical manufacturing hub in the region," he noted.

"We have planned a few overseas missions to explain the advantage of Kuantan Port as the dedicated petrochemical port. Once our expansion work is complete we will be proud owners of the longest and most sophisticated petrochemical berthing facility in region. Currently we handle one million tonnes of petrochemical traffic at our chemical berth," said Wong.

"Our intention is to place Kuantan Port and the Eastern Corridor as the best location for petrochemicals in Asia," ha said.

To promote this vision, KPC, as the dedicated petrochemical port operator now work closely with the Malaysian Industrial Development  Authorities, Pahang State Economic Development Corporation as well as with agencies in the other three states of the Eastern Corridor.
