Tough checks on tankers at European ports  

 

Despite apprehensions announced by the Asia-Pacific maritime community over unilateral actions by regions or countries on matters affecting standards and safety (see page x), European port states have announced an inspection blitz on oil tankers over 15 years old in response to the Erika oil spill last December.

 

More Port State Control Inspections Planned

The Asia Pacific Port State Control under the Tokyo Memorandum of Understanding has decided to increase the regional inspections percentage from 50 per cent to 75 per cent beginning 1 October, 2000.

 

Stronger Measures Against Piracy Needed

An international conference on combating piracy and armed robbery against ships held in Tokyo recently called for stronger measures to be taken by various authorities, including Flag States, to check the rising trend in piracy and armed robbery against ships in Southeast Asian waters.
